Unlocking opportunities: introducing Australia’s MATES Visa Scheme for Indian Professionals

Australia and India have forged a new path of collaboration through a Migration and Mobility Partnership Arrangement in the form of the recently announced Mobility Arrangement for Talented Early – professionals Scheme (MATES). This groundbreaking initiative aims to empower Indian nationals, particularly recent graduates and early career professionals, with the chance to gain valuable work experience in Australia.



Under MATES, eligible Indian university graduates and early career professionals can seize the opportunity to live and work in Australia for up to 2 years working in their chosen fields, while gaining invaluable experience. With a cap of 3000 places annually for primary applicants, individuals can also apply for dependents to accompany them, who will enjoy work rights without impacting the quota.


While the commencement date for MATES is yet to be announced, aspiring candidates can prepare by ensuring they meet reality ability criteria, which include:

  • Being aged 30 or younger at the time of application,
  • Not having previously participated in MATES,
  • Demonstrating a minimum overall IELTS or equivalent score of six, with no less than five for each of the four parts,
  • Graduating within two years from an eligible educational institution at the time of application.
  • Holding a bachelors degree or higher in one of the specified fields, including Renewable Energy, Mining, Engineering, Information  Communications Technology (ICT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Financial Technology (FIN Tech), or Agricultural Technology (AgriTech).
