With Australia’s vaccination numbers being one of the highest in the world, the Australian government continues to slowly relax COVIDSafe restrictions. Since complete border closure in 2020, to COVIDSafe border control measures in the beginning of this year, this new development is arguably the closest to familiarity in two years, and very much a welcomed one. As Australians get back to normality, which likely includes holidaying in their favourite overseas destinations, visitors will also benefit from this new ease of entry and departure requirements.
What is the Update?
From 6 July 2022, the changes outlined below are in effect:
- Individuals entering Australia do not need to provide evidence of their vaccination status.
- Individuals entering Australia do not need to complete the Digital Passenger Declaration or Maritime Travel Declaration.
- Individuals leaving Australia will not be asked to provide evidence of their vaccination status.
- Unvaccinated individuals who hold a visa do not need a travel exemption to travel to Australia.
While the above changes have been made, wearing a mask remains mandatory on all flights travelling to Australia. It is important to note that each Australian state and territory has its own requirements that must be complied with, and can be found at https://www.australia.gov.au/states. Although evidence of vaccination is not required when entering Australia, there may be vaccination requirements to visit certain venues or work in certain occupations, depending on the state or territory you are visiting. Make sure to check your state or territory’s requirements ahead of your travel. As well as Australians, International travellers entering Australia are also able to access Australia’s COVID-19 vaccination program.
Pandemic Event Visa, Concessions and Refunds
Due to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic period, a range of changes were made to some Australian visa categories, including the introduction of concession periods, fee waivers and visa refunds which can be found at https://www.homeaffairs.gov.au/covid19/visa-information. This also includes the flexibility of the COVID-19 Pandemic Event (subclass 408) visa. If eligible, this visa provides the ability to continue your stay in Australia even after your visa has expired.
