Australian Immigration Law Update – New Occupations added to the Priority Migration Skills Occupation List

by | Aug 2, 2021 | Migration

The Department of Home Affairs (DHA) has implemented changes to the employer sponsored visa scheme and the sponsored parent visitor visa (Subclass 870 visa) in July.

Minister Hawke added Pharmacist to the Priority Migration Skills Occupation List (PMSOL) to assist with the nation’s vaccine’s roll-out.

The following Pharmacist occupations will now receive priority processing and are now covered under the Australia Border Force (ABF) travel waiver exemption criteria:

  • Hospital Pharmacist (251511)
  • Retail Pharmacist (251513)
  • Industrial Pharmacist (251512)

This brings the priority list to 44 occupations.

Temporary Sponsored Parent Subclass 870 – Offshore concessions

The Department of Home Affairs (DHA) added an Instrument to the Migration Act which provides an 18 month concession to Subclass 870 visa holders unable to make an initial entry to Australia or stuck outside Australia due to the COVID-19 Australian Border Force travel restrictions.

This applies to visa holders who are outside Australia on 1 July 2021. The effect of the new instrument means that the period of the effect of the Subclass 870 visa will end 18 months after the date specified under the Subclass 870 visa.
