The subclass 482 visa program provides employers with assistance in filling a labour shortage that they are experiencing in their relevant industry. This visa allows companies to sponsor foreign workers who are skilled workers and allow them to contribute quickly. This program is particularly useful where significant labour shortages exist without appropriate short-term solutions such as the health care industry in recent years experiencing a critically low number of available Australian registered nurses.
As you may know, this visa subclass has undergone significant changes with the transformation of its previous program, the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa, into the new Skills in Demand (SID) visa, which came into effect from December 7, 2024. The SID visa has demonstrated more streamlined processing times in comparison to the TSS visa program; a significant improvement as a result of this program change. The increase in speed of processing benefits employers considerably by reducing the time to onboard skilled workers and allows foreign workers to commence in their roles in Australia more promptly.
While the current SID program has a relatively fast processing time (as outlined below), this change in program design has resulted in significant processing delays being experienced by those who lodged an application under the TSS program. If you are experiencing a significant delay in processing, we recommend reading out to your legal representative to discuss.
