- The Australian government has introduced legislation effective 11 August 2021 to remove automatic exemption for Australians to return to their overseas country of residence.
- Prior to this, having residence overseas was one of the automatic exemptions that would allow an Australian to depart Australia (although we advocate on the safe side and still apply for a travel exemption)
- From 11 August 2021, any Australian citizen or permanent resident ordinarily resident overseas will need to apply for a travel exemption in order to depart Australia.
