Family violence is very broadly defined in Australia. It can include not only physical violence, but verbal, emotional, psychological and financial violence. It may come as a surprise that the definition is so broad, but this is for the safety and protection of the widest possible group of people.
We act for people who have suffered family violence incidents, but also work with people who are alleged to have been violent, whether justifiably or not. Both men and women can suffer from family violence at different rates.
What is critical to remember in this area is the impact that family violence or perceptions of family violence can have upon people. It can open your eyes to realise that you were being abused or subjected to violence over many years. It is also known that the developmental effects on children of being exposed to family violence are profound, and this is a very good reason why the Courts act very protectively of children whenever allegations such as this are raised.
What is critical is that we work with you to help you through the family violence system and defend you against continued violence or against allegations. Call us to get our insight into your situation, and what the best approach might be to freeing yourself both from violence, and the system.
