Celebrating International Women’s Day: Luncheon in Honour of Dame Roma Flinders Mitchell

On Thursday, 12 March 2026, the Grand Hyatt in Melbourne played host to a truly inspiring International Women’s Day luncheon, jointly organised by Victorian Women Lawyers and the Women Barristers’ Association. This elegant event brought together members of the legal community to celebrate women’s achievements in the law while paying heartfelt tribute to one of Australia’s most groundbreaking figures: Dame Roma Flinders Mitchell.

Dame Roma (1913–2000) was a true pioneer. She made history as the first Australian woman appointed as Queen’s Counsel (1962), the first female judge (of the Supreme Court of South Australia in 1965), the first woman to serve as chancellor of an Australian university (University of Adelaide), and the first female State Governor (of South Australia from 1991 to 1996). Her legacy of breaking barriers and championing equality continues to inspire generations of women in the legal profession.

The highlight of the afternoon was an exceptional panel discussion featuring some of Victoria’s most distinguished judicial voices:

– Chief Judge Amanda Chambers of the County Court

– Justice Kerri Judd KC of the Supreme Court,

– Justice Bennett of the Federal Court,

– Judge Tran of the County Court,

– Magistrate Falla of the Magistrates Court.

A special thank you goes to all the attendees: Heather Dzviti, Ryan Curtis-Griffiths, Emily Barr, Rikki Stanley, Julia Zajac, Sibelle Amad, Sophia Korfiatis, Hannah Salisbury, Jenny Christofidis, Maggie Wang and Cam Scammell. Your support helps strengthen the networks and conversations that drive positive change.

Thank you to Victorian Women Lawyers and the Women Barristers’ Association for organising such a memorable and uplifting gathering. Onward to greater representation and impact!
