Australian visa changes: Subclass 482 TSS visa

by | Nov 15, 2024 | Migration

Australia has announced a series of changes to the Subclass 482 Temporary Skills Shortage (TSS) visa, from 24 November 2024, pending parliamentary approval.

These updates are being introduced by the Australian government to broaden access for skilled candidates and make it easier for employers to recruit suitable skilled employees.

Changes to the TSS Subclass 482 Visa (from 24 November 2024)

Reduced Employment experience Requirement: A significant change is the reduction of the required employment experience from 2 years to just 1 year. This change lowers the eligibility threshold and provides opportunities for a larger range of skilled workers, including recent graduates and professionals with less employment experience.

The updated policy also specifies that applicants must provide evidence of relevant employment experience in their field or a related area. For applicants without necessary formal qualifications, additional employment experience may be required, factoring in qualifications, skill levels, and the recency of the experience.

1. Removal of the requirement for employment experience to have been undertaken in the last five (5) years: The removal of the requirement for employment experience to have been gained within the past five (5) years. This allows applicants to count employment experience from more than five (5) years ago.  This provides a broader basis to meet visa requirements.

2. Recognition of Part-Time and Casual Work: Casual and part-time work now count toward fulfilling the employment experience criteria, provided it is relevant to the applicant’s occupation. This change rectifies previous restrictions where only full-time employment was considered, which often excluded those in sectors that rely on casual labour, such as hospitality and healthcare.

3. Non-Continuous Employment experience: The revised policy no longer requires employment experience to be continuous. Applicants can now present fragmented work histories, provided that the combined duration totals at least one year. This update benefits individuals with varied career paths or employment gaps, expanding the pool of eligible candidates.

Impact on Current and New Applicants

Accessibility: The reduction to one year of employment experience and the acceptance of varied employment types make the TSS 482 visa more accessible. This is particularly beneficial for new graduates or professionals whose career trajectories include non-standard employment patterns.

Simplified Transition for Temporary Workers: For individuals already in Australia on temporary visas or transitioning between roles, these changes streamline their path to permanent or extended employment. It provides a smoother shift from temporary work or short-term contracts to sponsored roles that support long-term residency.

Benefits of this Update

Addressing Skill Shortages: The reduction in employment experience requirements and the broader acceptance of employment types aim to fill skill shortages more effectively, especially in high-demand fields like hospitality, healthcare and IT.

Enhanced Workforce Diversity: Recognising part-time and casual work ensures a more diverse workforce that aligns with modern employment trends. This inclusion acknowledges the varied work formats prevalent in different sectors and supports equitable opportunities for workers from non-traditional backgrounds.

Opportunities for Employers: The changes allow businesses to tap into a broader pool of qualified candidates, facilitating quicker recruitment processes and more efficient fulfillment of roles critical to economic growth.
